During last week's trip to the thrift store, I came across a plain wood tray for a dollar. It was in sad shape and in need of a little work, but I knew it had potential. Here's what I did with it:
Since we all know I'm obsessed with stripes, I decided to paint the tray with classic black and white stripes.
Here's what it looked like when I first brought it home.
It's such a simple little project that makes a big impact!
To create this tray, I sanded it with some fine grit sandpaper to smooth it down. Then, I painted the entire tray white and let it dry. I began to measure and mark with a pen where I wanted my stripes to be, and then used masking tape to tape off the areas I wanted to keep white.
I decided I wanted my stripes to be 2 inches each. Here's what the tray looked like once I had all of the stripes taped.
Next, it was time to paint my stripes. I used a classic black paint.
Once all of my stripes were painted, and before the paint dried, I removed the tape. (Always remove the tape before the paint dries or it will rip up the paint.)
That's all it took to create this chic little tray.
I sealed the tray with a clear coat and let that dry. Once the tray was completely dry, I had a little fun styling it.You could really use this tray for anything....a serving tray, a vanity tray, magazine holder, etc. The possibilities are endless.
Thanks so much for stopping by today!!
By far- my favorite DIY blog I have found on the internet. I am obsessed and will be attempting some of this stuff- Already bought wood trays and the stuff needed for the chevron/sequined wall art. You really inspired me and your house is BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteQuestion- what type of paint did you use for this and what kind of sealer?
Lovelovelove this! Totally doing it. I'm striped-obsessed too! I use them in the header on my blog!

Your tray is adorable! I can't believe how much a quick paint job really transformed the piece. I might have to try this.
