Master Bedroom Updates and The Hot Pink Couch

Hey ya'll! First things first, thank you so much to every single person who took the time to email me, comment, or send their congratulations via social media after my last post. It really meant so much to me, and it totally took me by surprise to see how excited everyone was. I've felt a little down during this pregnancy due to being so sick, and it was just the boost I needed. Thank you guys.

So, moving on to today's topic: The master bedroom. As many of you know, I've blogged about this room a lot, mostly because the rest of our house was still stuck in the 70's for the first two years of this blog. But, this week I looked back at my posts from 2014 and realized that the last time I shared anything about this room was over a year ago, right before we started renovating the upstairs
So, basically, my mind is blown, and we somehow went an entire year without talking about this room.

So, it's time for updates. Because although nothing major has changed, like knocking down a wall or building a sauna, there have been a few changes that I've made to this room over the past year.

But first, a quick reminder of what this room looked like when we first moved in almost 5 years ago.
This picture gives me a very healthy dose of perspective. Because although it's one of the ugliest pictures I've ever taken, it reminds me that material things don't equal happiness. Because every time I see this picture, I remember when we first got married and bought our house, and that was truly one of the happiest times in my life.
I wasn't upset by the horrible 1970's dungeon that was my house...I was excited by the possibilities. And that's what this photo reminds me of...to never feel stuck by what is, but to instead be excited by what can be.

And so fast forward to June of last year, and this is what our bedroom looked like for about a month. We emptied out the old queen sized bed that I made and were waiting on the arrival of our new bed. It ended up taking much longer to arrive that we'd planned, so the room was empty for awhile.
It was a weird bedroom transition phase that I don't like to recall.

We bought the bed online so it was kinda a pain to assemble, but when all was said and done, it turned out beautifully. Plus, Jesse assembled it, so who am I to complain.
This Instagram pic is from 23 weeks ago. And I'm just now getting around to finally sharing the end results with you on the blog.
It's not normal, I know.

So, here's the bedroom as it looks today. The only major additions are the upholstered wingback bed, and two x-base nightstands. I also got some longer curtains and raised the curtain rod to the ceiling. The antique rug was given to me by my grandma, the scalloped chandelier is from this post, and the artwork above the bed is a gold placemat I framed in a Target frame.
The bed we bought is sold out now, but here's the link in case it gets restocked.

I looked everywhere for campaign style nightstands and eventually decided on these. I also added a couple mercury glass lamps that I found at a local store on clearance for $20 each.

Here are a few wide shots of the bedroom.
The french provincial dresser...still my best thrift store find to date.
If you're new here, the original dresser post can be found here.
And bonus, here's the original post about the closet makeover. It's a little outdated by now, but you can at least see what's going on in there.

Here's the view of the bedroom when you first walk in the room. I've temporarily put a little sofa in the side room.
My treadmill lives in there, too. And you get to see it. Because who has time to move that thing for photo's sake?

And because it's good to remember, this is what the side room looked like 5 years ago.
If you're in a similar situation and can't afford to remove your wood paneling, don't be afraid to paint it. I had no experience whatsoever and all it took was a little research and a lot of elbow grease, and it's held up just fine. I used Kilz primer and BM Simply White flat wall paint. That's it.

Here's a closeup of the side room today. This is all very temporary because I think I'm going to make this room the nursery. At least for the first little while. So, the sofa will probably get moved elsewhere and so will the treadmill.
And so will that horrid boob light because, no.

But for the past little while, it's been nice to have a sofa in there. You may remember this little sofa from the basement (probably not). It was slipcovered in a brown slipcover and when we gutted the basement a few months back, we almost got rid of it, but I decided at the last minute to keep it and see if I could use it elsewhere.

And Jesse was SO excited that I wanted to keep the sofa because underneath the slipcover was this:

The above pic was taken after I had Jesse haul it upstairs by himself like he was an ant.
You can just imagine his joy.

And then I had him move it back to the bedroom, in all its hot pink glory, because really, what do you want from me.
I couldn't part with it.

Ultimately I decided to tone it down a notch and cover it with an off-white slipcover. I'm thinking I will eventually move this little sofa to the foot of the bed, but we'll see.
Until then, it will just look pretty and I'll feel like a person who can afford to have a pretty little sofa in her bedroom.
But, we'll all know the real story, you and me.
HOT PINK $50 COUCH FROM 1982.

Oh, and here's one last little wide angle...I also raised the curtains over the doors out to the deck. I don't know why, but raising the curtains to the ceiling makes such a big difference.
That curtain rod is a sad spaghetti noodle, but baby steps.

And here's your yearly update on the silver leaf vanity...still one of my favorite redos. I currently have all of my hair stuff (blow dryers, etc) in that wooden bin. I keep planning to paint it and put some caster wheels on it, but it hasn't happened yet.

I've just come to the accept that this is one of those life phases when hanging curtains, slipcovering a tiny pink sofa, and assembling some furniture takes me 6 months.

But, I'm working on another very important project, so I know you guys will understand if I move even slower than usual.
23 weeks today.... :)

That's all for today, ya'll! I'll be back soon to share my top 10 blogging tips. It only took me 3 years to finally put together a blog post about blogging. :)

    1. I just knew I would have tiny couch regret if I got rid of it. Plus, i had a feeling it would look pretty cute if I could just get the right slipcover. :)

  8. Good to hear you're still yourself - arranging and rearranging adhd style as per usual. That's why I'm always intrigued to hear what you're going to do next. And I'm kind of curious about the couch that you mentioned. Do you have any plans of upholstering it, maybe stylizing it with some tufts? I only ask because I've been putting off my own first go at upholstering (distracting myself with painting the new house first). But I got my hands on a large wing-backed chair, shredded a bit by cats, that I'm dying to make pretty again but I'm not sure I have the confidence and know how yet to tackle such a large and detailed piece. You most certainly did a gorgeous job (re)upholstering the bench and side chairs, but I'm curious what your thoughts are if you were going to reupholster a more intricate piece (like say your couch or my chair). Do you suppose the process would be different from what you did before, or do you think the method would be relatively the same just with more surface area and material to work with?

    1. Hi Sarah! It was way easier for me to just slipcover the little sofa. I used a Surefit slipcover which is super stretchy and molds almost perfectly to your sofa, so it really almost seems like it has been reupholstered. I've never reupholstered any larger items like a sofa because frankly, it would be really time consuming. I try to stick to smaller items like chairs and ottomans. That being said, a wingbacked chair is definitely doable! I've seen quite a few great tutorials from other blogs on how to reupholster a wingbacked chair. Try googling them and I'll bet they'll make you feel a bit more confident about tackling it on your own! I know you can do it!! Best of luck!!! xo

  9. Put the pink couch in the nursery! I think it's really cute and would be perfect in a little girl's room. If I was having a baby girl right now her nursery color combo would be a super light turquoise and dark pink. Also, your tiny bump is adorable!

    1. Thanks Lindsay! It was tempting, but the pink material is kinda worn and rough feeling. I mostly just enjoy knowing that there's a hot pink couch in my possession...because how ridiculous. P.S. I love the combo of dark pink and aqua...so cute! :)

  10. The bedroom looks like a little piece of Heaven! Having that side area become a nursery will be so convenient. Can't wait to see what you do with that space. Is the paint color still Behr's Wheat Bread?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, it is Wheat Bread in the main room and then BM Simply White in the side room. I tried using Wheat Bread in there, too, but it just looked too dark.

  11. Hi Virginia! You are just lovely and I check your site regularly. I love and admire all your makeovers - I want to paint all my furniture white! :) Your writing is so informative. You are so real and very funny! Congratulations to you and Jesse and hope you are feeling better these days. :)

  12. Congratulations! I missed your previous post, but hope you feel better soon. Your bedroom is gorgeous, you have done an absolute 180 and it's definitely an amazing space. That little room could be a million different things, dream closet? haha that's what I would do. A nursery will probably be a great idea for the beginning though as it's right there! :)

  14. You are so talented. I couldn't even believe the difference in those side room shots. At least I'll know what to do if I ever buy a home with those hideous wood paneled walls. (; Have a great weekend!

  15. My mom used to say, "if you're really sick with morning sickness, it's (baby) got a good hold". But I also think its God's way of making you slow down and let baby develop in the most important time. I was way sicker with our boys, course I had 5 boys. And 2 girls. Now we get grandkids to totally enjoy. Congrats on finally having a sweet lil baby. It's the best stage of life.

  16. Hi, Virginia! Your blog was the first home makeover blog I ever stumbled upon, and it has been a true inspiration as I have begun to tackle our own newly-purchased '70s home. Thank you for sharing your genius with us! I wonder if you would mind answering a slipcover question... I am in the market for one, and I have been leaning toward twill or cotton duck. Do you prefer the stretchy kind? I have been concerned that they would shift around more or be easily torn by our sofa-loving pup. :)

  17. Omg congrats! Love ur cute little baby bump!!

  18. How cool to be able to have a nursery so close to your bedroom! When our kids were little, we lived in an 80' long trailer house!!!! The master bedroom at one end, the other two bedrooms at the other end. It seemed liked 80 miles between ends on those nighttime feedings. ;-) So glad you're feeling better. Congrats on your upcoming little one....LOVE your bedroom. It just keeps getting better and better.

  19. Virginia, I just want to point out that you had your new bed assembled 23 weeks ago and now you're 23 weeks pregnant... Hmmm lol! I'm a huge fan of your blog. I just recently bought my first home and I channel you sometimes when I make decisions about decor and refinishing projects. Very happy for you and Jesse. Congratulations!

  20. Love your master!! That rug is fabulous, it's a great pop of color. You have such an amazing eye for design, I'm jealous! How cool is that to have that little bonus room off your room?! What a gem! Congrats on the pregnancy, I know this little girl is going to have the most beautifully decorated nursery

  26. Your master is nothing short of FABULOUS! It's so fresh and airy and beautiful! My hubs and I are gerring ready to re-do our master after 15 years, I'm cluless and panicking...hoping for some inspiration.
I was so very fortunate that I didn't suffer morning sickness with either of my children. I never quite understood the toll it takes on women until I went through 2 granchildren's worth of morning sickness with my daughter-in-law. Oh my goodness! My heart broke for her. One good thing about it is that just as quickly as it started, it also ends. I never felt better or more energetic in my life than I did in those middling to just before delivery months of pregnancy. Look forwrd to those and remember R & R is the name of the game today. p.s. I secretly hope someday that your precious pink couch gets to be pink again. It was such a pretty pink.

  30. hey!! So I havd a confession ... I Found your blog like three days ago and have read every blog post you've ever written {I have had some time on my hands} .... I love your style of writing, your design style and I've had the best time reading!! Lol! I recently (within the last month or so) have found an appreciation for spray paint too! I actually went to SIX .. Count them. SIX .. Thrift stores I found online yesterday ... Because we're new to our area and I don't know which ones are good yet. FOUR of them don't even sell furniture and the two that did were SERIOUSLY over priced and too nice for a project.., where the heck did I move to!!!!???? (Jacksonville, NC that's where ..)
So anyways, congratulations on your baby and I can't wait to read more.. And I also can't wait until it's warm enough to garage sale, because I don't think the thrift stores are going to cut it for me around here! :)

  31. Congrats! Such wonderful news! I first read your blog when I had a desk that I needed to redo. I found your blog on your vanity makeover and it totally inspired my very first desk makeover, so thank you!

MY friends and I call this our "pregnancy drink" In a glass of ice add club soda (plain or lime flavored) add cranberry juice to make it a pretty pink color, then top with a lime slice. It's so refreshing for calming upset tummies. Lots of luck to you both!

  32. I just want to say "thank you, thank you, thank you" for this wonderful blog. I found you by googling "how to paint a chandelier silver." Your advice was spot on and my chandelier turned out fantastic. All your advice is just so inspiring and I've now turned my gaze on some of my old stuff. Gonna get busy now!

This is the best DIY blog EVER!

  36. Hi!

Congratulations! I've been following your blog for a few months now, and spent about a week going through all your older posts.

Anyways, I have a quick questions. Do you have any experience with fabric paint? I have an old red chair that I would like redo, but I'm afraid to update the fabric with my limited experience. I bought a bottle of white fabric paint, and was just wondering if you have used anything like it before?
