DIY Christmas Ornament Ideas

Hey ya'll! So, I've spent this entire week fumbling my way around getting our Christmas tree up. And by fumbling I mean that Jesse assembled my thrift store tree in about 10 minutes (and then went back to doing manly things), and then I spent the next 4 days hotglueing and glittering my way to exhaustion.
Oh, to be a man that can wash his hair with dishsoap and exist on nothing but meaty burritos. What a sweet gig.

Anyways, I digress.
THE TREE IS UP!
And it feels kinda nice to have it up the week before Thanksgiving. I really don't think there's any wrong time to put up your tree.
Put it up in June. Put it up December 24th.
It's your tree, girl. You're the boss.

This year, this week felt good, so that's what I went with.

Just like last year, I decided to make a bunch of my own ornaments, and I'm super excited to share one of my faves with you today.
Here's what I've made so far.
It's kind of an ongoing process.

Last week when I was going through my wreath factory phase (evidenced here and here), I bought a giant bag of amazing old lady buttons for $5 at Hobby Lobby. I had no idea what I was going to do with them, but I have this weird love for buttons and just couldn't pass up a giant bag for $5. And then as I was decorating the tree, it occurred to me that I could make some ornaments. I'm totally in love with they way they turned out, and think they are such a sassy little addition to this year's tree.

These were super easy to make. Slightly tedious, but easy all the same. All you need is styrofoam balls, hot glue, and tons of lady buttons.

To hang them, I glued a little button upside down on the top of the ornament and threaded some string through the hole.
I dedicate these sassy gals to my late great aunt Wei (pronounced 'Wehhhh') who used to let me sit on her floor as a tot and play with the bucket of buttons she for some reason collected.
The obsession lives on, Wei.

I'm still working on finishing up a few more ornaments and possibly a tree skirt, so hopefully I'll be able to share some pics of the completed tree next week or so. But for now, it's up.
 It's up, ya'll.

'Til next time!

  4. I have been reading your blog for a couple of months now, and I love it! Your writing style is so fun. I appreciate how you break down projects so amateurs (like me, ahem...) can feel comfortable giving it a shot. I tried making a pillow cover with glue, but it turned out kind of...lumpy. I think it was user error : )

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. I loved all your ornaments last year and can't wait to see what else you've done this year! And I agree, put up your tree whenever you want. Thanksgiving is so late this year that if you wait until after, your tree will only be up for a few weeks!
