How To Make Pillows With Glue (and A Living Room Sneak Peek)

I've been boycotting our living room since May 2012. If you ever saw this post, you know how many ridiculous mistakes I have made with this room, and they continued long after that post. Letmetellyouwhat.
So, it's been 1.5 years, and I've finally decided to work on this room again. I still have several big projects to finish, but I thought it might be fun to share a sneak peek and do some pillow-talking.

When I began to come up with a new plan for this room last month, I started with my color scheme. Our sofas, ottoman, and walls are all beige, and the floors will eventually be a mid to dark hardwood. It's a very neutral space, so pretty much any array of accent colors would work. I've always decorated with really light feminine colors in this room, but my style has slowly started to evolve and I really wanted to do something a little different. I ultimately decided to go with deep emerald green, lime green, navy, and any other sort of blue that strikes my fancy along the way.

I came across some dark green velvet pillows for just $10 here, and I was so pleased when they arrived and were gorgeous.
Plus, they come in tons of different colors, so don't be surprised when you see velvet pillows popping up all over my house.

Then, I decided to make a few pillows of my own, using my favorite fabric glue. I found some colorful floral fabric and some beige silk fabric (both Hobby Lobby) and got busy cutting and glueing.

I won't go into great detail about the love-hate relationship I have with my sewing machine. For that story, and for a full tutorial about how to make an easy envelope pillow using only fabric glue, you can go here.
After sharing my first post about glue pillows, I found out that a lot of you feel the same way. So, thank you for making feel like I'm not the only person who struggles with my lack of sewing skills! And for all those who asked if the glue holds up, yes. I've washed my pillow covers tons since that original post, and so far, so good. :)

I added a bunch of new colorful details to the room, but for today I'll just share this one. I made a little gathering of some colorful thrift store vases, and spray painted an old mirrored tray gold.

And because we keep things real here, you should know that this little arrangement has already made its way into a different room. Because Tootie and Cheese feel as though it's their life mission to tip over anything with water inside.
But, just know I tried. I tried so hard.

It was so pretty while it lasted! But that's okay, because there are tons of other colorful additions to this room, all of which are still underway. I'll be back soon to share more about this room as I finish up the other projects. Can't wait to show you everything!

  1. Oh, it's breathtaking already. I can't wait to see the rest. Don't daisies make everything look so fresh! Okay, now a quick-kind of room related question.... I have the same color couch and chair in my living room and lemmetellyou, I LOVE that you posted about Cheese (One of my cats does the same thing, AND eat all my plants and flowers to nubs. NUBS!!) BUT, what I really wanted to ask you is what do you clean your couches with, because my other cat LICKS MY COUCH! ALL THE TIME! So instead of having pretty beige couches, I can color coordinate as my mood/tastes/seasons/I'm a chick who can't leave anything alone for two long changes, I have icky cat "marks" from where she has licked the couch!! (Ugh) Next investment! Leather couches! (Worked perfectly for kid messes in the car! ;) ) The things we do for our pets! ;)

  2. I love your glued pillows technique! Since June have made 3 different sets of pillows. Love the blog, love your style... and mostly importantly, love that you always keep it real.

  3. So pretty! I hate hate hate the brown brown brown everywhere in our house. It came that way. I have 20-foot ceilings, and zero motivation to more than complain about it. :)

I've decided to embrace the brown (for now), and focus on the rich blues & reds that we already have going on. The Man is a firefighter, so lots of that kind of stuff resides in our house. I need to work on a new blog post about all of the changes taking place on the one huge wall in the living room...he's not sure about it yet, but he will be. Oh! He WILL be...

  4. Virginia, I love the new colors! (especially for fall/winter) The dark green velvet pillow is such a beautiful jewel tone! I do believe your room is finished as it is beautiful to the eye! I plan on making a few of your "glue pillows" as my living room is all white with pillows, etc as my colors. I can't wait to have pillows for every season! I did want to ask you a question. Have you ever considered bringing the nail head pattern on your ottoman around to the back to give it a finished look? I only ask because the ottoman is seen from all angles.

    1. Hi Jane! Thanks so much! Yes, I would love to do that, but it's actually faux trim and not individual nailheads. If it were real, I would love do that! Just one of those little imperfections I'll hafta embrace, I suppose! :)

  7. How very refreshing to see something besides gray or white these days! Your living room is looking great. And thanks for keeping it real. I love seeing someone else design around their kitties. Life is life, and we can't always have our homes look like they were staged for a magazine. Have a great weekend! Sue

  8. I have the same problem with my cats wanting to knock over any container that has liquid in it! My solution came from a garage sale where I came across lbs and lbs of free glass aquarium beads. I just drop a handful in the bottom of a vase and it makes it like a no-tipping-over cup - very bottom-heavy :)

  9. So excited that I found your blog! I love it already! I never even knew fabric glue existed, so this is a really cool post.

Have you ever used (or do you know if it can be done) the glue for a simple hem? I'm getting married in the summer and want to make my own table runners (they're outrageous to rent!), but I don't own a sewing machine. I know I could do them by hand, but it would take so long. Glue would be perfect, if it can hold up. What do you think?

    1. Thanks so much Lynn! Yes, I actually just used the fabric glue on my curtains when I let out the hem and made them longer. It worked great! Just make sure to let it fully dry.

  10. love the fabric on the pillows! I actually have that same tray and have no idea WHAT to do with it. I don't like it the silver that it is, but I don't know if I want it gold, it just sits in a pile of neglected things. suggestions?!

    1. Thanks Lauren! You can pretty much spray paint it any color you want! That try has been painted at least three times...Ha! I just use some paper and masking tape and cover up the mirrored bottom before spray painting. xo

  11. Those pillows I wouldn't normally gravitate toward, but you made them rock Virginia! I would buy them in a minute! They go so well with your other pillows. :)

  13. It is about it be ON! Now, I know I should probably create a "pattern" to make sure my pillows are even. But, it's about trial and error, right? I am SO excited! I just made my first "glue pillow" and it actually looks great! Now, NO pillow or pattern is out of reach. AND, I can make the HELLA BIG couch pillows that cost a grip for a few bucks!

  14. I tried to leave a comment on here before but it didn't go through. Anyways I love your tutorial actually I love your entire blog and I don't even like blogs to say the least. What dimensions would you recommend if you have larger pillows? Mine are 24 x 24" on my couch and there are 8 of them, there is no back to my couch so this would be perfect and save my bank to fix my ugly poor old leather backless couch. Thank you!!
