Painting the Inside of Dresser Drawers: A Mini Makeover

So, remember a while ago when I painted my favorite thrifty dresser that is in my bedroom? Well, I have a secret. It's been unoccupied since the day I brought it home. I made the outside of the dresser all pretty by painting it with a soft white...

but it didn't solve the problem going on inside of the dresser.

However, after working hard to spruce up the outside of the dresser, I experienced a little project avoidance and just let it sit there empty...for months.
I finally decided that that I had to do something about it so that we could actually use it. So, I fixed it.

Here's what I did...just in case you have a thrift store dresser laying around that needs a good cleaning.

First, I primed all of the insides of the drawers with Kilz primer to kill/trap any of those weird smells and then I used one of my favorite paints to give the drawers a pretty pop of color. It was the same gorgeous color I used in my striped bath.

It totally transformed the dresser and turned it into a piece we can use everyday.

I love the way it updates this old dresser.

  7. Painting the drawers really made a big difference! I've always figured no one would ever really look inside, so what did it matter...I guess it does help to paint them up nice! Great job! :)

  8. I love it, good job! I just missed out on a similar dresser. Someone beat me to it on our swap meet at work and I'm still recovering from the disappoint as I search craigslist. It was exactly what I was looking for to use as a TV stand in my living room.

  21. this is a really pretty idea! The whole thing looks fabulous. I've been waiting on purchasing some designer shelf papers for my projects because of the cost, but this may be a good alternative until then :)

  23. This is great! Just found your blog via Domestic Imperfection. I just quit my awful part-time desk job so I could stay home with my kids, and have inadvertently stumbled into professional dumpster-diving. Yay! I'm currently refinshing a solid-wood armoire I found on the side of the road. I can see I'm gonna get loads of ideas from you! :)

  27. I have a question about painting the inside of drawers. I am getting ready to tackle my very first furniture painting project and want to paint the sides and inside of the drawers an eggplant purple. Do I need to have any concern about paint pigments over time transferring to clothing that is in the drawers? Is there something I should use to seal the color to prevent this? Or once it is dry, is it simply not a concern? Pardon my paint ignorance and thanks for your help!

  28. Do you use the polycrylic or anything else on the inside of the drawers or just leave the paint? Thank you so much! You have inspired me to repaint my furniture instead of buying!

  29. Love it! Did you paint the bottoms of the drawers too?
