DIY Mod Podge Hangers

Before today, I had never decoupaged anything in my life. I bought a small thing of Mod Podge last December, but pretty much just stared at it longingly for the past 8 months, waiting for it to speak to me and tell me what to do. Because I had no idea.

And then I did my $50 closet makeover and my little jar of Mod Podge spoke up and said 'Pssst. Hey girl. It's time.'

And then I made one of my favorite little projects ever!

I had a set of wooden hangers that didn't quite fit in with my awesome dollar store plastic hangers, and they were just begging for something fancy. So, I embarked on my maiden Mod Podge voyage and decoupaged the little fellas.

I decided to mix it up a little bit, too.
So, I decoupaged a few of the hangers with some wrapping paper (just on the front side) and painted the sides and back with leftover paint from my favorite blue dresser.
Then, I spray painted the others gold.

Now, obviously I'm no Mod Podge expert, this being my first project and all. But, turns out decoupaging is easy.
(And I'm likely the only person on the planet who missed that memo back in 1992.)

Let's talk details.
You only need a few supplies, most of which I already had on hand in my craft hoarding zone.

Supplies:
1. Wooden Hangers (Great deal on these here.)
2. Painter's Tape (to cover the metal parts if you spray paint some of the hangers)
3. Spray Paint (I used Rustoleum Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold)
4. Wrapping paper (both were from Target)
5. Acrylic paint (I had planned to use those little acrylics, but reverted back to the blue dresser paint.)
6. Paint brush or foam brush
7. Mod Podge (I used the matte finish.)
*Above links all take you to my Amazon Affiliate shop.

Step 1:
I used my exacto knife to cut a piece of wrapping paper to be slightly larger than the size of my hanger.
In retrospect, it might be easier just to glue an entire piece of paper on and cut/sand it off afterwards.
I learn as I go, ya'll.

Step 2:
I applied a thin coat of the Mod Podge with my paintbrush. I've heard it's better to use a sponge brush, but my craft closet just couldn't deliver.
Tiny artist's brush, it's up to you, Man.

Step 3.
Next, I put the paper on top of the glue, and used some random card from my wallet to smooth out all of the air bubbles. I've heard that pan scrapers are great for this step, too.

Step 4:
After letting the Mod Podge dry for about 15 minutes (That stuff dries FAST!), I used some fine grit sandpaper to sand off all of the excess paper around the edges.

Step 5.
After I sanded the edges, I decided to paint the rest of the exposed wood on the hanger. I probably could have done this first (and made my life easier), but I didn't plan to paint the hangers at first.
This clearly was uncharted territory.

Step 6.
While I let the blue paint dry, I covered the hooks on the remaining hangers with tape and took them outside to spray paint them gold. I love the way the gold hangers look paired with the blue and orange.

Step 7:
The final step (just for the blue hangers, not the gold spray painted hangers) was to paint a final coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface and let it dry.

And just like that, the little hangers were born.

I absolutely love the way they turned out and they look so pretty in my closet. They were just the perfect little addition and fit in so well with all of the other gold accents and blue walls.

So, tell me.
Is it normal to feel this excited about decoupaging?

  4. I think you may have discovered a new top three favorite material here :) They turned out very cute! Very You as well. I love the pictures you take, by the way. I use another brand of Mod Podge a lot, mostly for image transfer. Maybe something for you to try? ;) Mod Podge should have an addiction warning on it, though...

    1. When I was living in Guatemala City I had a dream one night that a Target opened up in my neighborhood. I was so sad when I woke up the next morning! Fortunately I visited the States frequently so I could get my Target fix during those visits home.

  10. This is one of those projects that I was like YES!! I have to do that!! Last weekend, I went through my closet and made "the piles". Everything's out that should be out. ;) Since my closet is little, so there is not a lot I can do with it to pretty it up--or so I though. I absolutely must replace all of my "fabulous dollar store plastic hangers" (high five Virginia!) with wooden ones. These are flippin' adorable. I loved the wrapping paper idea versus scrapbook paper--that is genius. My daughter and I covered some light switch covers with scrapbook paper which is cute, but it's so thick, it doesn't wrap well, so I'm thinking we are going to change those up too.

  12. I love the cohesive look of the hangers with the different prints of paper & paint... That would make a very cute birthday or 'thank you' gift set to give! I'm impressed!
TIP: It would also be worthwhile to have packages of inexpensive emery boards in your craft stash for the small sanding projects - like sanding off the excess paper from the hangers. ;)

  15. I'm a Modgepodge virgin too but am going to go all out and start on a big project, a mannequin I found at Lifeline that I want to cover with old sewing patterns. It's on my very soon to do list.

  17. Hi Virginia, just discovered your blog today and I´m loving it!
Could you please tell me what type of paint you´ve used on the laminated furniture? I´ve read you used chalk paint, but the mixture was with an acrylic or synthetic paint?

    1. Hi Catarina! I usually make my chalk paint with latex paint. On the blue dresser I just used normal latex paint (not chalk paint) with a primer underneath and a coat of Polycrylic on top.

  19. Ok. I am in serious love with your blog and have been since it started but this is my first ever comment! I am redoing my bedroom and love, love, LOVE those paint colors you used on the hangers and i was wondering if you could tell me the names of them?

    1. Hi Morgan!! So nice to hear from you! And thank you! The light blue is Sherwin Williams Sea Salt (same color as my closet and master bath, and I got it color matched at Home Depot bc it's cheaper that way!) And then the gold is Rustoleum Bright Coat Gold spray paint. Hope that helps! xo

    2. Oh, and also, the slightly more saturated blue is Marina Isle by Behr. I think! It's been awhile...that's the same color as the blue dresser. :)
