DIY Mod Podge Hangers

Before today, I had never decoupaged anything in my life. I bought a small thing of Mod Podge last December, but pretty much just stared at it longingly for the past 8 months, waiting for it to speak to me and tell me what to do. Because I had no idea.

And then I did my $50 closet makeover and my little jar of Mod Podge spoke up and said 'Pssst. Hey girl. It's time.' 

And then I made one of my favorite little projects ever!

I had a set of wooden hangers that didn't quite fit in with my awesome dollar store plastic hangers, and they were just begging for something fancy. So, I embarked on my maiden Mod Podge voyage and decoupaged the little fellas.

I decided to mix it up a little bit, too.

So, I decoupaged a few of the hangers with some wrapping paper (just on the front side) and painted the sides and back with leftover paint from my favorite blue dresser.

Then, I spray painted the others gold.

Now, obviously I'm no Mod Podge expert, this being my first project and all. But, turns out decoupaging is easy. 

(And I'm likely the only person on the planet who missed that memo back in 1992.)

Let's talk details. 

You only need a few supplies, most of which I already had on hand in my craft hoarding zone.

Supplies:

1. Wooden Hangers (Great deal on these here.)

2. Painter's Tape (to cover the metal parts if you spray paint some of the hangers)

3. Spray Paint (I used Rustoleum Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold)

4. Wrapping paper (both were from Target)

5. Acrylic paint (I had planned to use those little acrylics, but reverted back to the blue dresser paint.)

6. Paint brush or foam brush

7. Mod Podge (I used the matte finish.)

Step 1:

I used my exacto knife to cut a piece of wrapping paper to be slightly larger than the size of my hanger. 

In retrospect, it might be easier just to glue an entire piece of paper on and cut/sand it off afterwards.

I learn as I go, ya'll.

Step 2:

I applied a thin coat of the Mod Podge with my paintbrush. I've heard it's better to use a sponge brush, but my craft closet just couldn't deliver. 

Tiny artist's brush, it's up to you, Man.

Step 3.

Next, I put the paper on top of the glue, and used some random card from my wallet to smooth out all of the air bubbles. I've heard that pan scrapers are great for this step, too.

Step 4:

After letting the Mod Podge dry for about 15 minutes (That stuff dries FAST!), I used some fine grit sandpaper to sand off all of the excess paper around the edges.

Step 5.

After I sanded the edges, I decided to paint the rest of the exposed wood on the hanger. I probably could have done this first (and made my life easier), but I didn't plan to paint the hangers at first. 

This clearly was uncharted territory.

Step 6.

While I let the blue paint dry, I covered the hooks on the remaining hangers with tape and took them outside to spray paint them gold. I love the way the gold hangers look paired with the blue and orange.

Step 7:

The final step (just for the blue hangers, not the gold spray painted hangers) was to paint a final coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface and let it dry.

And just like that, the little hangers were born.

I absolutely love the way they turned out and they look so pretty in my closet. They were just the perfect little addition and fit in so well with all of the other gold accents and blue walls.
